Ghost Rider Chronology: Part Two

When 1990 started the Ghost Rider had laid dormant for a good seven years, with only a meager handful of appearances for various related characters during that time.  Danny Ketch was introduced and started a whole new resurgence of interest in the concept, which led to massive sales success and lots and LOTS of guest appearances.

This entry will be looking at the entirety of the 1990s as Ghost Rider had multiple spin-offs and special editions released, most of which can be easily slotted into a chronological order. There were also side characters that received the attention, as John Blaze returned to solo success of a lesser degree and Vengeance made his debut. This is a list that likely won't change much over time, as the 1990s are pretty locked-in in regards to continuity, though there are of course flashbacks and the occasional retro story that can be slotted in as needed.

After the relaunched Ghost Rider series hit the two-year mark, plans started to spin the character off into an entire family of related titles called the Midnight Sons.  John Blaze had returned by this point, using a hellfire shotgun but otherwise divorced from the Ghost Rider, and was given a co-headliner position in a second Ghost Rider title.  There were lots of interconnected storytelling going on during this era, but it's all pretty straight forward once you break things down.  It all culminates in "Road to Vengeance: The Missing Link", which provided readers with the Medallion of Power origin story and revealed that Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch are long-lost brothers! Also, in 2023 Marvel released a flashback mini-series for this era's Ghost Rider, and though it doesn't fit very well into the actual continuity of the time it can be slotted in here.

The 17-part "Siege of Darkness" crossover featured the return of Zarathos and Lilith and ended with the death of the Danny Ketch Ghost Rider.  For a brief period a newer character, Vengeance, took over as the "new Ghost Rider", including taking the lead spot in the Marvel Comics Presents anthology title. John Blaze got a solo spotlight mini-series and Dan Ketch returned fairly quickly, just in time for the main title's 50th issue. Vengeance fell out of favor after that, but did make a few sporadic appearances.

At this point our three main characters - Dan Ketch, John Blaze, and Vengeance - all go their own way for a year or so.  These threads can be followed in any order before the trio come back together.

The remainder of the 1990s found Danny Ketch moving to the Bronx and learning the origin story of Noble Kale, his ancestor that had been transformed into a Ghost Rider back in the 18th century and had been cursed by Mephisto to be the possessing Spirit of his descendants. The series ended with the curse ending and Noble briefly becoming the King of Hell. That was short-lived though, as the series was cancelled before the final issue was released and the story not having a published conclusion until 2007.

So ends the 1990s, with the character in limbo in much the same way as at the end of the 1980s. There won't be as long of a downtime before the character is revived once again, though the next decade sees Johnny Blaze back in the saddle as the Spirit of Vengeance.
