Kevin has led Dr. Strange and Ghost Rider to his dead father's warehouse, where his mother and her cult performed their sacrifices to Gorn.  Sensing the innocent blood that had been spilled, Ghost Rider enters the warehouse and attacks the cult members, avenging their slain victims.  Dr. Strange finds Kevin's mother, and the boy is finally able to confront her about the death of his father.  He realizes now that it was her that killed him all because he wanted to protect Kevin from being used as a sacrifice for Gorn.  With the police on their way, Ghost Rider and Dr. Strange leave, though Strange is still intrigued by the mystery behind Kevin's mystical potential.

Gorn is confronted by Dr. Strange and Ghost Rider, who have fought their way through the demon's minions to rescue Kevin.  Dr. Strange recognizes Gorn as a minor demon and that his realm is actually under the rule of Mephisto.  Ghost Rider steps forward and beats Gorn savagely while Dr. Strange protects Kevin.  Gorn reveals that Kevin's mother was a member of a cult of worshippers that were going to sacrifice the boy to open a doorway to Earth for Gorn to enter.  When Kevin's father attempted to stop the sacrifice, the mother killed him by throwing alcohol in his face while he was smoking, burning him to death.  Strange transports himself, Ghost Rider, and Kevin out of Hell just before Mephisto arrives to confront Gorn, possibly destroying the minor demon in the process.  Back on Earth, Kevin agrees to lead Strange and Ghost Rider to his mother to bring the boy's pain to a conclusion.

Having fallen into his dimension, the demon Gorn torments young Kevin Moran with dozens of doors, promising to make the rest go away if Kevin chooses the right one.  Kevin remembers his father being set on fire by his mother, which Gorn tells him was Kevin's own fault.  Elsewhere in the realm, Ghost Rider and Dr. Strange have arrived and recognized their surroundings as the dimension ruled by Mephisto.  They locate Gorn's minions, Spike, Slick, and Pain, and confront them.  Pain jumps into a horde of damned souls, who mutate him into a further demonic form.  Ghost Rider and Dr. Strange fight back against the souls, knowing they must find Kevin.  Gorn, meanwhile, continues to tell Kevin that it was his fault his father died, that his mother knew what was right for him and his father interfered.  Kevin runs away from Gorn and finds Dr. Strange and Ghost Rider, having fought their way through the demons.

Serial killer Eugene Stone had just received Ghost Rider's Penance Stare, causing him to relive all of the pain he had caused his victims.  He attempts to kill himself by jumping off the roof of a building, but doesn't die when he lands.  He's found by Gorn's two servants, who drag the broken killer back to their home dimension.

Meanwhile, Dr. Strange attempts to transport Ghost Rider and Kevin across the city via levitation.  Kevin's fear of Ghost Rider's flames causes him to fall, but his fall is broken by Strange.  They run into a cemetery, where Kevin finds himself overwhelmed by all of the mausoleum doors around him.  Gorn's two minions arrive and attempt to talk him into going through their doorway portal.  When Ghost Rider and Dr. Strange catch up to them, they release Eugene from the portal, having transformed him into a creature called Pain.  During the fight, Kevin falls backwards into the doorway, sending him to Gorn's realm.  The minions follow, but Ghost Rider is able to snag Pain with his chain, and both he and Dr. Strange are dragged through the portal behind him.

The demon Gorn chastises his two followers for allowing the boy Kevin to escape his realm, telling them that he has to enter of his own free will in order for Gorn to escape.  He sends them back out to find Kevin, who has been rescued by Dr. Strange.  The two sit on the steps of the Sanctum Sanctorum, and Kevin tells Strange that he was running from a demon with a fiery skull.  Assuming it to be Ghost Rider, Strange and Kevin go out in search of him.  Ghost Rider, meanwhile, has tracked down a gang leader that has kidnapped a young girl.  When he finds the young girl dead, Ghost Rider drags the criminal to the roof and gives him the Penance Stare just as the police are arriving.  Dr. Strange and Kevin arrive and spirit Ghost Rider away, while the criminal that received the Penance Stare finds himself unable to withstand the torment and jumps off the roof.

Archaeologist Hamilton Slade is doing research on UCLA's campus when he is visited by a young woman giving a tour to a group of children.  The children go outside to see the bones of ancient mammoths unearthed from the La Brea Tar Pits, while Slade notices a strange man that sends his "phantom sense" reeling.  Suddenly, the tar from the pit covers the bones and reanimates the mammoths, sending them on a rampage through the campus.  Slade transforms into the Phantom Rider and jumps out the window to stop the monster, but finds his "phantom force" fired from his guns to be useless.  The strange man transforms into D'Spayre and gloats that he is feeding off the fear and despair of the children.  Phantom Rider goes up to the children and tells them to enjoy the show and illusions, then performs some fancy tricks with his horse.  The kids stop being afraid and D'Spayre loses his power, leaving him vulnerable to the Phantom Rider's guns.  The mammoths return to being harmless skeletons when D'Spayre flees, but the woman in charge of the kids hints to the Phantom Rider that she knows it was real and not a show after all.

While Ghost Rider takes out a gang of drug dealers, he is being watched by a 10-year old boy named Kevin Moran.  This is the third time Kevin has found and observed Ghost Rider, but this time the flaming-skulled vigilante sees Kevin as well.  Kevin runs and boards a subway train, thinking back to when his mother set his father on fire in front of a doorway.  Now afraid of doors, Kevin has traveled to the field outside Kennedy Airport, only to find a mysterious doorway standing in the grass.  Two young children come out of the door and push Kevin inside, where he's confronted by a demon with a red flaming skull that claims to be his father.  Terrified, Kevin sprints through another doorway and lands in an alleyway beside yet another door.  When this door opens, however, Dr. Strange steps through demanding answers to the dimensional disturbances he has sensed.
